Many Monogram bags have handles and trims in untreated vachetta leather. It starts out pale and slowly darkens to a warm honey colour through light and use. This patina is normal and loved by many collectors. Keep vachetta away from water and greasy hands, because it marks easily. Damier Ebene bags usually have darker, coated trims that need less care.

Date codes and microchips

From the early 1980s until around 2021, most Louis Vuitton items carried a date code: a combination of letters and numbers indicating where and when the piece was made. Since then, Louis Vuitton has gradually replaced date codes with embedded microchips. A date code is not a certificate of authenticity on its own, but it helps to date a bag.
