Vintage Gucci Bags: Bamboo, Jackie, Horsebit and GG Marmont
Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci and grew from a leather goods workshop into one of the world's best-known fashion houses. Vintage Gucci is hugely popular, partly because the house regularly brings its archive designs back. Here are the icons to know.
The icons
- Bamboo: introduced in 1947, when materials were scarce after the war. Artisans heated and bent cane to create the curved handle that became a signature.
- Horsebit: the metal snaffle detail comes from the equestrian world and first appeared on Gucci's loafers in the 1950s, later on bags such as the Horsebit 1955.
- Jackie: a slouchy hobo shoulder bag from the early 1960s, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, who was often seen carrying it.
- GG canvas: the interlocking GG monogram on coated canvas, a classic on totes, Boston bags and wallets.
- GG Marmont: a modern classic with quilted chevron leather and the double-G hardware, popular as a shoulder bag, belt bag and wallet.
What to check on vintage Gucci
- Corners and edges of canvas bags for wear and fraying.
- Leather trims and handles: look for darkening, cracks and stitching.
- Bamboo handles: check for cracks or splits.
- Interior tag: most Gucci bags have a leather tag with "Gucci, Made in Italy" and a style number.
Our detailed photos and condition ranks show exactly what to expect.
Gucci through the decades
- 1950s and 1960s: the era of the bamboo handle, the horsebit and the Jackie, when Gucci became a favourite of film stars and jet-setters.
- 1970s and 1980s: GG canvas and the green-red-green web stripe appear on many bags, wallets and travel pieces.
- 1990s: under Tom Ford, Gucci became sleek and sensual, with minimalist leather bags and bold bamboo designs.
- 2000s: the GG canvas and the Jackie returned in new versions, and the floral Flora print became popular.
- 2015 to the early 2020s: under Alessandro Michele, Gucci turned colourful and eclectic, with the GG Marmont, the Dionysus and many archive references.
Because the house keeps revisiting its archive, vintage pieces from every era fit easily into today's wardrobe.
Caring for vintage Gucci
- GG canvas: wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth; avoid soaking the fabric.
- Leather trims: use a conditioner for smooth leather sparingly and test it first on a hidden spot.
- Bamboo: keep it away from heat and very dry air, which can cause cracks. Never soak it in water.
- Storage: stuff the bag with tissue paper and keep it in a dust bag.

How to style vintage Gucci today
A bamboo top-handle bag adds instant elegance to jeans and a blazer. A Jackie works well with relaxed knitwear and denim, while a GG canvas crossbody gives a casual outfit a recognisable touch.
