Buying a Pre-Owned Luxury Watch: 7 Things to Check

October 13, 2026 4 min read By Vintage Designer Club

Pre-owned Rolex Datejust 16013 steel and gold automatic watch

A pre-owned luxury watch is one of the smartest ways to own a Rolex, Omega, TAG Heuer or Cartier. Prices are lower than new, and many models keep their value well. These seven checks help you buy with confidence.

1. Model and reference number

Every model has a reference number that tells you exactly which version it is: size, material, dial and movement. Use it to compare prices and to read up on the model before you buy. On our product pages you will find the model name and reference whenever it is known.

2. Automatic, manual or quartz?

  • Automatic: winds itself while you wear it. Most Rolex and Omega models work this way.
  • Manual: needs to be wound by hand, usually every day or two.
  • Quartz: battery-powered, very accurate and low-maintenance. Many Cartier and Seiko models use quartz.

3. Condition of case, glass and bracelet

Light scratches on a polished case are normal for a watch that has been worn. Look at the glass, the bezel and the bracelet. A metal bracelet can stretch slightly over the years, which is visible as gaps between the links. Our condition ranks and photos show all of this.

4. Box and papers

A watch with its original box and papers (often called a "full set") is popular with collectors and usually holds its value best. A watch without papers can be a smart choice if you simply want to wear it. Each product page lists the included accessories.

5. Service history

Mechanical watches benefit from a regular service. Manufacturers typically recommend a service every five to ten years, depending on the brand and how the watch is used. A recent service is a plus; if the history is unknown, factor in a service at some point.

6. Water resistance

Gaskets age, so water resistance on a pre-owned watch cannot be taken for granted, even on a diver's watch. Have it pressure-tested by a watchmaker before you swim with it.

7. Buy from a specialist

Buy from a seller who checks every watch for authenticity and describes the condition honestly. Every watch at Vintage Designer Club is checked before it is listed.

Popular pre-owned models to know

  • Rolex Datejust: the classic dress-and-everyday watch with the date window and magnifying lens.
  • Rolex Submariner: the iconic dive watch, also loved as an everyday sports watch.
  • Omega Speedmaster: the chronograph famous for its role in space travel. Read our Omega guide.
  • Omega Seamaster: a versatile dive and sports watch range.
  • Cartier Tank and Santos: elegant rectangular and square designs that work with both suits and jeans.
  • TAG Heuer Carrera and Aquaracer: sporty Swiss watches with a racing and diving heritage.
  • Seiko: watchmaking with an excellent price-quality ratio, from quartz to automatic.

Choosing the right size

The case diameter is the most important measurement. As a rough guide, 26 to 34 mm feels small and classic, 35 to 39 mm is a timeless middle size, and 40 mm and above is modern and sporty. The distance from lug to lug matters too: if it is wider than your wrist, the watch will overhang. Thickness also plays a role, especially under a shirt cuff. Check the measurements on the product page and compare them with a watch you already own.

Caring for your watch

  • Wear or wind it regularly: an automatic watch that sits still will stop, which is normal. Set the time and date again before wearing it.
  • Avoid changing the date around midnight on many mechanical watches, as the date mechanism is engaged at that time.
  • Keep it away from strong magnets, such as those in speakers and some phone cases, as they can affect accuracy.
  • Clean the bracelet now and then with a soft brush and lukewarm water, only if the water resistance has been checked.

Frequently asked questions

Is a watch without papers a bad buy?
Not at all. Many pre-owned watches are sold without papers. If you want to wear the watch rather than resell it, a watch without papers can offer excellent value.

Why does my automatic watch run a few seconds fast or slow?
Mechanical watches always deviate slightly each day. A small deviation is normal; a watchmaker can regulate the movement during a service.
